Picking Your Color Palette

I always say wall color is power.  What does that mean exactly? It means that you shouldn’t be afraid to express your personality through your walls and decor. When I work with a client or wisher, I suggest colors that reflect them not me.

When someone walks into your home, they should never question if this is your home. Guests should say “this is exactly how I expected your space to feel.”

Some tips for selecting your perfect color palette are the following:

  • There is a psychology to color and how it makes you feel. Get in tune with your feeling and select feelings that represent you, your personality and how you want to live. For example you may have a very intense job, always on the move, always in meetings, running here there and everywhere, and when you come home you want a calming, peaceful and relaxing space that makes your feel calm, content, zen and almost spa like. Then red wouldn’t be the color I would ever suggest. I would suggest a spa blue, grey, tan or teal.
  • How do you want to live. If there was a hotel, region, country or city that makes your feel good, which one would you pick? Say you like coastal retreats, then maybe a sea glass green or blue would be perfect,
  • Don’t get caught up in the color this is trending, Let’s say terra cotta is the color that is hot, use it sparingly and in areas that it’s a quick fix, You can bring trending colors in by pillows, area rugs and accessories like a bowl. Or if you love it and it feels right use it to paint your laundry room, a mud room, powder room or very small foyer or entry.
  • Even something as simple as weekly fresh cut flowers can do the trick to bring in a color you love for a season.
  • Love it or leave it. I always say you have to LOVE everything you do in your living space. If the words “it’s nice for now, or it will grow on me” come to mind, find another option. The beauty of color palettes is there are SO MANY colors, shades and hues to choose from.
